*Correspondence: M. R. Tarbutt, Blackett Laboratory, Centre for Cold Matter, Imperial College London, Prince Consort Road, London SW72AZ, UK e-mail: [email protected] The simple structure of the BH molecule makes it an excellent candidate for direct laser cooling. We measure the branching ratios for the decay of the A1 (v ′ = 0) state to vibrational levels of the ground state, X1 +, and find that they are exceedingly favorable for laser cooling. We verify that the branching ratio for the spin-forbidden transition to the intermediate a3 state is inconsequentially small. We measure the frequency of the lowest rotational transition of the X state, and the hyperfine structure in the relevant levels of both the X and A states, and determine the nuclear electric quadrupole and magnetic dipole coupling constants. Our results show that, with a relatively simple laser cooling scheme, a Zeeman slower and magneto-optical trap can be used to cool, slow and trap BH molecules.

Magneto-optical trapping of holmium atoms

We demonstrate sub-Doppler laser cooling and magneto-optical trapping of the rare-earth element holmium. Atoms are loaded from an atomic beam source and captured in six-beam σ+ − σ− molasses using a strong J = 15/2 ↔ J = 17/2 cycling transition at λ = 410.5 nm. Due to the small difference in hyperfine splittings and Landé g factors in the lower and upper levels of the cooling transition the MOT...

Laser cooling of Yb for isotope separation and precision hyperfine spectroscopy

The hyperfine transitions in the 399 nm S0↔ P1 line in Yb overlap with the transition in Yb. We use transverse laser cooling on this line to selectively deflect Yb atoms from a thermal beam containing both isotopes. We then use an acousto-optic modulator to span the frequency difference between the hyperfine transitions, and hence measure hyperfine structure in the P1 state. Our precise values ...

Effect of Cooling on Bending Angle and Microstructure in Laser Tube Bending with Circumferential Scanning

Laser tube bending is a flexible forming process. Two irradiation methods of axial and circumferential scanning are generally used to form metal tubes. The two most important disadvantages of circumferential scanning are its lower bending angle and the time interval required between each scan for cooling purpose. In this research, a novel cooling strategy during laser tube bending with circumfe...

Theoretical Structural and Spectral Analyses of TEMPO Radical Derivatives of Fullerene

The spectroscopic properties of the 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-piperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) radicalderivatives of the fullerene (C60) were theoretically investigated. The ground state optimizedstructures of the radical adducts of the fullerene were calculated by using DFT (B3LYP) with 6-31G(d) level. It was concluded that a 6-6 ring junction of C60 moiety generally covalently links to thepiperidine ring ...

Vibrational branching ratios and shape resonant photoionization dynamics

Vibrational branching ratios and photoelectron asymmetry parameters for alternative vibrational modes in the photoionization of N 20 ( 7 u1 ) have been studied using accurate photoelectron continuum orbitals. Earlier dispersed ionic fluorescence measurements [E. D. Poliakoff, M. H. Ho, M.G. White, and G. E. Leroi, Chern. Phys. Lett. 130, 91 ( 1986)] revealed strong non-Franck-Condon vibrational...
